Intellectual Property Training
Delivery Option: Online & Offline
An organization’s intellectual property is often instrumental in its competitive and commercial success. Employers must educate employees to protect intellectual property from unauthorized discovery or use.
Why Train on Intellectual Property?
Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind that are protected by law under commonly known legal classifications including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. Organizations often derive competitive advantage from their intellectual property; therefore, its misuse can cause both financial and reputational damage. Employees must understand how to protect both their organization’s intellectual property and the intellectual property of outside parties.
What Does this Course Cover?
This course teaches employees the laws, organization policies, and penalties regarding the use and misuse of intellectual property, including the organization's own intellectual property and that of competitors and other third parties.
Employees will learn practical skills to aid them in recognizing intellectual property, safeguarding the intellectual property of the organization, and steering clear of misuse of outside intellectual property. In particular, the course teaches employees to:
- Recognize and safeguard the intellectual property of the organization. This includes:
- copyrights
- patents
- trademarks
- trade secrets
- Keep confidential and proprietary information private, not sharing it outside the organization without authorization, even if the intended recipient is a relative, friend, customer or supplier
- Respect the intellectual property rights of others
- Avoid even the appearance of impropriety with others' intellectual property
- Understand that disrespecting others' intellectual property rights could lead to employee discipline, loss of reputation and lawsuits
- Apply organization policy to specific situations
- Report questionable situations and the procedures for doing so
How is the Course Information Delivered?
Through a series of scenarios and interactive exercises, employees learn how to identify and respond to situations where intellectual property may be misused. Employees are asked to answer multiple choice questions where they consider the possible outcomes and implications of hypothetical situations. They are also required to correctly answer three questions in a ‘Quiz Show’ exercise in order to complete the course. The course concludes with customized information about how to get assistance and report concerns within your organization.
